A single laser system for ground-state cooling of 25Mg+

Abstract: We present a single solid-state laser system to cool, coherently manipulate and detect 25 Mg + ions. Coherent manipulation is accomplished by coupling two hyperfine ground state levels using a pair of far-detuned Raman laser beams. Resonant light for Doppler cooling and detection is derived from the same laser source by means of an electro-optic modulator, generating a sideband which is resonant with the atomic transition. We demonstrate ground-state cooling of one of the vibrational modes of the ion in the tr… Show more

“…We use a hyperfine qubit consisting of the states |↓ Mg = |F = 3, m F = 3 and |↑ Mg = |F = 2, m F = 2 of the 2 S 1/2 electronic ground state. The Raman laser system for coherent manipulation of the 25 Mg + qubit via the 2 P 3/2 Level is based on a frequency-quadrupled fiber laser 31 . The detuning from the atomic resonance is fixed at 9.2 GHz, limiting ground state cooling efficiency 27 and qubit operations due to spontaneous Raman scattering 32 .…”

“…The beams have tc and a + polarization to maximize the coupling strength and are at right angles to each other with the difference wave vector aligned along the axial direction of the trap. This results in a Lamb-Dicke parameter of r] = 0.3 [67] for the axial mode of interest here. The limited detuning of the Raman laser beams leads to off-resonant excitations, which result in dephasing and population loss during coherent manipulation as further discussed in Sec.…”
