Background To strengthen the health system in five counties of Western Kenya, the System Enhancement for Transformative Health (SETH) Project provided training on coaching to its officers and coordinators to build their capacity to support health management teams address the challenges they face in their daily work. Health management teams manage entire counties in kenya with limited management training and experience. Following 3 days of training, the project team provided coaching sessions to health management teams and was supervised by a professional coach over a 2-year period. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of using professional coaching techniques to improve the capacity of project officers to support HMTs in Kenya. Methods (14) Key Informant Interviews (KII) and (5) Group interviews were conducted with all SETH project officers and coordinators trained on coaching and the HMTs members they supported to collect their perceptions on the feasibility and benefits of the intervention components. Respondents were also asked about the sustainability of the project. Results Results show that coaching improved the project officers’ self-reported skills and competencies to provide support to county HMTs. The project offers reported feeling better equipped to help HMTs identify lasting solutions to the challenges faced in their daily work. HMTs also reported having gained knowledge and skills to be used on their daily work thanks to the coaching sessions received. Conclusions The study indicates that integrating coaching in health system strengthening is feasible and appreciated by participants in the intervention. The potential impact of coaching on work performance and on health indicators remains to be evaluated.

Vignettes have been applied in many academic disciplines over time, as an essential element of experiential learning. At the Department of Educational Communication and Technology, adoption of vignettes instructional method by instructors remains slow, while application by early adopters remains inconsistent. Despite this, little is known about how utilisation of vignettes to teach business ethics at the Department influences teacher trainees’ ethical sensitivity in decision-making. The cross-sectional survey design guided the research process, and primary data were sourced in 2018 from 116 learners. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques were applied. Key results show that trainees who strongly agreed that utilisation of vignettes influenced their ethical sensitivity in decision-making had about 2 times the odds of being ethically sensitive in their decisions as their colleagues who expressed strong disagreement about the same. Besides, those who agreed that utilisation of vignettes influenced their ethical sensitivity in decision-making were about 1.9 times as likely to make ethically sensitive decisions as those who indicated strong disagreement. On aggregate, utilisation of vignettes caused a positive and significant influence on trainees’ ethical sensitivity in decision-making. It also emerged third in the order of relative importance. Notably, the more the trainees appreciated that utilisation of vignettes influenced their ethical sensitivity in decision-making, the higher odds of making ethically sensitive decisions. Thus, improving trainees’ knowledge on the various parameters of vignettes’ utilisation is likely to enhance their ethical sensitivity in decision-making. This may be achieved by dedicating a section of training modules on optimisation of vignette utilisation.

Deployment of Background Knowledge and Performance in Comprehension Passage Reading among Primary School Learners in Vihiga County, Kenya

Background. Primary school learners in Vihiga County have been recording a lower mean score in English language examinations than their counterparts in neighbouring counties, with the score being lower in comprehension passage than in grammar sections. Few previous studies conducted in Kenya have investigated the issue from the instructional dimension, thereby limiting stakeholders’ understanding of the issue and delaying appropriate interventions. Aim. To determine how the deployment of learners’ background knowledge influences performance in reading comprehension passages. Method. Solomon Four-Group Design guided the study. Data were sourced in mid-2017 from standard six learners and English language teachers. Regression analysis generated two models, one for the experimental and control groups, each. Results. In both models, deployment of background knowledge had a significant positive effect on the performance in reading comprehension passages, which prompted rejection of the null hypothesis. However, the effect was stronger in the experimental group than in the control group. The variation was attributed to training provided to the experimental group teachers, which improved their skills in activating learners’ background knowledge. Conclusions. Activating learners’ background knowledge is a vital antecedent to better performance in reading comprehension passages and the English language. Although prereading vocabulary is vital for the activation of learners’ background knowledge, overreliance on a single strategy to activate learners’ background knowledge undermines optimal deployment of background knowledge skills in reading, albeit with implications on performance.
