A solid flow model for blast furnace based on hypo-plasticity theory

Abstract: International audienceA finite element method has been used to model solid flow inside a cold blast furnace, based on a hypo-plastic constitutive equation. This equation was calibrated with data obtained from simple soil mechanics tests on coke material. The steady state velocity and stress fields were determined after an iterative enmeshment procedure. The most significant results include the computed shapes of the deadman zone and the active and passive state regions, the transition between plug flow in the … Show more

“…As for the mechanical load conditions, many kinds of model have been developed for the elucidation of granular assembly dynamics such as discrete element model 8,9) and plasticity model. 10,11) With the help of these models, the mechanical loading conditions inside actual blast furnace can be evaluated. On the other hand, as regards the compressive strength of cokes, it is not easy to measure its actual value directly because measured values will show serious fluctuation due to the heterogeneity of coke matrix.…”

“…This method was applied to the stress analysis during packing and after ignition of blow-in operation of Kokura #2 BF, 12) and successfully reproduced actually measured variation of stress distribution in the furnace. Zaïmi et al [13][14][15] used hypo-plasticity as stress-strain relationship and succeeded to calculate deadman shape and stress distribution in a small cold model of blast furnace.…”

“…Inada et al 68) analyzed the stress distribution in an actual blast furnace using elasto-plasticity theory to reproduce the measured vertical stress variation during burden charging. Zaïmi et al 71,72) used the hypo-plasticity theory to describe solid flow behaviour, in which incremental equations for the stress and strain tensor increments are developed. In Fig.…”

“…The solid phase may be treated as a plastic fluid so that elasto-plasticity 68) and hypo-plasticity 71,72) theories can be employed to describe the stress-strain relation of solid particles.
