A solitary encapsulated pelvic aggressive angiomyxoma

Abstract: Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) was first reported in 1983 as a distinct, slow growing, benign but locally infiltrative, soft tissue tumour. It usually arises in the pelvic and perineal organs, mostly in women. A 47-year-old woman was found to have a large encapsulated retroperitoneal aggressive angiomyxoma. The mass was completely excised via abdomino-perineal approach, and no recurrence noted on MRI at 19 months' follow-up. The encapsulation of this tumour together with other reported rare presentations, sugges… Show more

“…However, encapsulated AAMs have also been reported [1,6,7] .The present case was different, as the tumour was well circumscribed. The histopathological features include hypocellularity, hapahazardly arranged blood vessels of varying calibres, a myxoid stroma with collagen fibres and extravasated erythrocytes.…”

“…Unlike malignant neoplasms, do not metastasize, and, histologically, they demonstrate bland nuclei without atypia or mitotic activity. However it usually tends locally to recur [10]. Correlation between tumour size and subsequent risk of recurrence has not been demonstrated [11].…”
