A solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms found areas lining the pleura. First reported in 1931, there have been a total of 55 cases of SFTs of the kidney worldwide. In most cases, SFTs presents with hematuria, flank pain, and enlarging abdominal mass. In this case, we report a case of a patient who underwent a radical nephrectomy to remove an SFTs of the kidney with compression of the vena cava. This case further expands upon the importance of diagnosing and assessing the aggressive clinic… Show more

“…However, SFTs have also been reported at extrapulmonary sites, such as the liver, mediastinum, breast, lung, meninges, and urogenital organs[ 7 ]. According to previous reports, 15% of SFTs originating in the kidneys are located in the renal capsule, 6% are located around the pelvis, 3% are located in the renal pelvis, and 76% do not have a clear site of origin[ 8 ]. The first case of renal pelvis SFT was reported by Yazaki et al [ 9 ] in 2001.…”

“…Median age at the diagnosis is 51 years (range: 4-85) and the incidence has been reported to be higher in female subjects (7). Although about 15% of SFT of the kidney have been reported to be located in the renal capsule and 3% in the renal pelvis, the site of origin remains unknown in the majority of cases (5). The majority of SFT of the kidney are benign with about 14% of cases exhibiting malignant behavior (6,7).…”

“…Surgical resection is the mainstay of therapy of SFT involving the kidney (6). The role of nephron-sparing surgery in patients with SFT of the kidney is unclear and, currently, the standard treatment is radical nephrectomy due to the malignant potential associated with the disease and lack of recurrence after radical surgery (1,5).…”
