A solution for medical and legal problems arising from forgotten ureteral stents: initial results from a reminder short message service (SMS)

Abstract: The objective of this study was to describe and present the initial results of a computer-based system that tracks ureteral stents and automatically sends a reminder through a short message service (SMS) to both the patient's and the urologist's mobile phones Using an integrated stent register program (SRP) and a stent extraction reminder program (SERP) with an electronic patient record program (EPRP) located within our hospital's computer network. In this system, the demographic data of all of the patients ar… Show more

“…An electronic stent extraction reminder facility recall base has been proposed [23]. A computerbased system that tracks ureteral stents and automatically sends a reminder to both the patient and the urologist's phones has been described [24]. BStents on strings^have been proposed where one end of the stent is tied to a string which is externalized for easy removal later [25].…”

“…Since the introduction of the double J catheters into the urological practice in 1978, there has been a great improvement in the physical components of the catheter including the quality of the materials making them widely used 6,9 . Frequent use of these catheters is associated with inconsistent follow-ups, especially in large centers where the high volume of patients makes it difficult to control the use of devices.…”

“…This method attempted to eliminate the possibility of neglect by the physician. 27 Owing to morbidity of retained DJS, a system should be formulated for documentation of DJS and a plan for their removal. Development of digital technology has enabled developing countries to devise an executable plan and follow up for DJS, in order to prevent severe complications.…”
