A Sound and Complete Left-Corner Parsing for Minimalist Grammars

Abstract: This paper presents a left-corner parser for minimalist grammars. The relation between the parser and the grammar is transparent in the sense that there is a very simple 1-1 correspondence between derivations and parses. Like left-corner contextfree parsers, left-corner minimalist parsers can be non-terminating when the grammar has empty left corners, so an easily computed left-corner oracle is defined to restrict the search.

“…In particular, the processing predictions depend on the interaction of three factors: the parsing strategy, the syntactic analysis, and the complexity metrics. Here, I put aside the choice of parsing strategy (but see Hunter, 2018;Stanojević and Stabler, 2018), and briefly address concerns about the remaining two factors.…”

“…The goal here is to adjust the parsing mechanisms of Stanojević and Stabler (2018) so that they produce a search space where the choice points are more in line with the psycholinguistic literature's framing of the choices that confront the human sentence-processing mechanism regarding filler-gap dependencies. With respect to the tree diagrams, we would like a parser that can establish the dashed-line connection down to a wh-phrase at the point where the wh-phrase is consumed, and delay the solid-line connection until later.…”

“…See Figure 4. The place where the parser presented here differs from that of Stanojević and Stabler (2018) is in the treatment of MOVE rules. These are treated as ways to "extend" the other parsing transitions.…”

“…Left-corner parsers (which can be seen as a more constrained version of CCG Left-branching parsing strategy) seem more psychologically realistic than top-down parsers (Abney and Johnson, 1991;Resnik, 1992;Stanojević and Stabler, 2018). Some proposals about handling right adjunction in left-corner parsing are based on extension to generalized left-corner parsers (Demers, 1977;Hale, 2014) that can force some grammar rules (in particular right-adjunction rules) to be less incremental.…”
