A source classification framework supporting pollutant source mapping, pollutant release prediction, transport and load forecasting, and source control planning for urban environments

Abstract: The SCF provides a well-structured approach for European pollutant source and release classification and management. With further optimisation and demonstration testing, the SCF has the potential to be fully implemented throughout Europe.

“…When the problematic substances in the local context and their sources are identified, a quantification of sources and flows give information on where the largest sources are [12]. This information can then be used to prioritize between substances and sources [1]. However, as pointed out by Hörsing and Ledin [26], a prioritization should not only be based on quantities but also how harmful the substance is.…”

“…The water and wastewater company has the right to request an action plan from connected industries on how they plan to phase out these substances. A quantification of flows and sources also result in different source control options [1]. However, this requires that there are some source control options identified.…”

“…Environmental pollution is considered a great challenge for both ecosystems and humans (Persson et al, 2022), and many pollutants are concentrated in urban areas (Lützhøft et al, 2012). Within the urban area, wastewater and stormwater can transport the pollution to the water environment.…”

“…Environmental pollution from a wide range of sources is concentrated in urban areas (Holten Lützhøft et al 2012), and urban waters, i.e. stormwater and wastewater, are important pathways (Revitt et al 2013).…”
