“…In addition, a spatial ecological study on hair Se levels in KD in Heilongjiang Province, China, showed that the median hair Se levels of the residents in the KD-endemic areas were significantly lower than those in nonendemic areas. Measuring the Se levels in the hair of residents of KD-endemic areas can be a molecular marker of Se nutritional status and provide visualized evidence for the evaluation of KD elimination from the aspect of Se nutrition [ 56 , 57 ]. Taken together, these data support the idea that Se deficiency is widely accepted as a fundamental cause of KD, and serum Se levels, serum SEPP1 levels, and hair Se levels can be used as biomarkers for monitoring Se status in residents in KD-endemic areas to some degree.…”

“…Após a realização de Ensaios-piloto de reposição de Se, estudos epidemiológicos relacionaram a eficácia do tratamento com selenito de sódio com a prevenção da doença de Keshan e o alívio das manifestações clínicas [73,76,77]. Estudos publicados em 2020 e 2021 ainda relacionam a presença de baixos níveis de selênio sérico e capilar detectados com as áreas endêmicas da doença de keshan [78,79].…”

“…In the past seven decades, numerous researchers and medical workers have created two etiological theories through regular monitoring of KD and numerous clinical and ecological studies, they were biogeochemical selenium deficiency with soil and water factors and biological factors of enterovirus [7][8][9][10][11] . Zou et al [12] analysed the hair selenium content of 401 male permanent residents in endemic and non-endemic areas of KD in Heilongjiang Province in 2021, he found that the hair selenium median of residents in KD endemic areas was significantly lower than that in nonendemic areas, and that the prevalence of endemic areas residents was positively correlated with low selenium levels, it suggesting that residents in endemic areas may still be deficient in selenium. Therefore, the biogeochemical information of selenium in the KD area are still relevant significance for the study of the cause of KD and its effective prevention.…”
