A spatiotemporal analysis of fire incidents in Manila from 2011-2016

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report the results of spatiotemporal analysis of the 3,506 fire incidents in the city of Manila from 2011 to 2016. Design/methodology/approach A spatiotemporal and statistical analysis was carried out to determine the pattern of fire incidents in the city of Manila. Findings Fire incidence in Manila did not exhibit any pattern in terms of time, day of the week or month of the year. However, fire incidence did exhibit a pattern in terms of location. Faulty electrical … Show more

“…A subsequent paper reporting on spatial analyses and spatiotemporal analyses (e.g. Cusimano et al , 2010; Ceyhan et al , 2013; Špatenková and Virrantaus, 2013; Guldåker and Hallin, 2014; Marco et al , 2017; Liu et al , 2018; Low et al , 2018; Bringula and Balahadia, 2019; Chhetri et al , 2018; Yoo et al , 2018; Elia et al , 2019; Tang et al , 2019; Xia et al , 2019) that we are also conducting on the same VFRS incident dataset will be submitted hereafter.…”

“…Although the government has operational Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) programs, made ample preparations, and braced themselves for the worst, they were simply crushed and overwhelmed by the scope and enormity of the destruction (Dariagan et al, 2021). Moreover, Bringula and Balahadia (2019), presented the increasing fire incidence in Manila which exhibits a pattern in terms of location. Faulty electrical connections are the major cause of fires throughout the year and in the 14 municipalities of Manila.…”

“…In other countries, researchers employ spatiotemporal analysis methods to extract patterns from data of fire incidents, the results of which are used in creating fire prediction models (Bringula & Balahadia, 2018). Asgary, Ghaffari, and Levy (2010) noted that studies were successful in providing insights about spatiotemporal patterns of fire incidents, which were useful in planning fire prevention and response management (e.g., Špatenková & Virrantaus, 2013;Balahadia & Trillanes,2017;Balahadia, et al, 2019;Yao & Zhang, 2016;Wang, et al, 2011).…”

“…Also, Alqassim & Daeid (2014) and, locally, Bringula & Balahadia (2018) conducted spatiotemporal analyses of fire causes. Apart from the previously mentioned study that involved one of the authors, there is little research in the Philippines that uses a similar approach.…”
