A spectroscopic study of the Algol-type binaries S Equulei and KO Aquilae: absolute parameters and mass transfer

Abstract: We present and analyse high‐resolution optical spectra of two Algol binaries, namely S Equ and KO Aql, obtained with the echelle spectrograph at Catania Astrophysical Observatory. New accurate radial velocities (RVs) for the hotter primary components are obtained. Thanks to the cross‐correlation procedure, we were able to measure, for the first time to our knowledge, RVs also for the cool secondary components of S Equ and KO Aql. By combining the parameters obtained from the solution of the RV curves with thos… Show more

“…The data of Panchatsaram & Abhyankar (1981) yield a detached system and have therefore been disregarded. dP dt is taken from Panchatsaram & Abhyankar (1981) and Soydugan et al (2007). This system has an accretion disc with R disc ≈ 1.5 × R g .…”

“…stellar surface and increase the luminosity locally. This hotspot is observed in some Algol-like stars (e.g., Banks et al 1990;Weiland et al 1995;Richards & Albright 1999, in case of direct accretion on the stellar surface and Harmanec 2002; Soydugan et al 2007 in case of accretion on the edge of a disc).…”

“…It is clear that the observed gainers are underluminous compared to the theoretical counterparts, as was previously noted by Soydugan et al (2007). The evolution of a close binary can be divided into two distinct phases: an initial phase of fast mass transfer (increasingṀ) on a thermal timescale, and a later phase of slower mass transfer (decreasingṀ) on a nuclear timescale (e.g.…”

“…TheṀ for RZ Cas was derived from O-C curves. For KO Aql and S Equ, we use the results of Soydugan et al (2007). All these are given in Table 1.…”
