One of the most common trends in plant evolution, loss of self-incompatibility and ensuing increases in selfing, is generally assumed to be associated with a suite of phenotypic changes, notably a reduction of floral size, termed the selfing syndrome.We investigate whether floral morphological traits indeed decrease in a deterministic fashion after losses of self-incompatibility, as traditionally expected, using a phylogeny of 124 primrose species containing nine independent transitions from heterostyly (heteromorphic incompatibility) to homostyly (monomorphic self-compatibility), a classic system for evolution of selfing. We find similar overall variability of homostylous and heterostylous species, except for diminished herkogamy in homostyles. Bayesian mixed models demonstrate differences between homostylous and heterostylous species in all traits, but net effects across species are small (except herkogamy) and directionality differs among traits. Strongly drift-like evolutionary trajectories of corolla tube length and corolla diameter inferred by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models contrast with expected deterministic trajectories toward small floral size. Lineage-specific population genetic effects associated with evolution of selfing may explain that reductions of floral size represent one of several possible outcomes of floral evolution after loss of heterostyly in primroses. Contrary to the traditional paradigm, selfing syndromes may, but do not necessarily evolve in response to increased selfing. “…Although the development and testing of a spiritually-integrated intervention specific to the psychological, physical, and R/S challenges of burn survivors is ultimately an important aim, another useful approach that may facilitate acceptance, healthy adjustment and growth following burn injury is integrating the use of cognitive techniques with R/S. For instance, gaining an understanding of patients’ idiosyncratic R/S meaning systems about the burn injury through guided association, helping patients identify the origin of their religious assumptions and automatic thoughts, challenging absolute or dichotomous thinking when appropriate (Nielsen, Johnson, & Ellis, 2001; Richards & Bergin, 2005; Shafranske, 1996; Worthington, Kurusu, McCullough, & Sandage, 1996). Behavioural strategies could also be effectively adapted to assist burn survivors with their personal R/S coping process (Miller & Martin, 1988; Propst, 1988, 1996).…”

For decades, research on long-term adjustment to burn injuries has adopted a deficit model of focusing solely on negative emotions. The presence of positive emotion and the experience of growth in the aftermath of a trauma have been virtually ignored in this field. Researchers and clinicians of other health and trauma populations have frequently observed that, following a trauma, there were positive emotions and growth. This growth occurs in areas such as a greater appreciation of life and changed priorities; warmer, more intimate relations with others; a greater sense of personal strength, recognition of new possibilities, and spiritual development. In addition, surveys of trauma survivors report that spiritual or religious beliefs played an important part in their recovery and they wished more healthcare providers were comfortable talking about these issues. Further evidence suggests that trauma survivors who rely on spiritual or religious beliefs for coping may show a greater ability for post-traumatic growth (PTG). This article reviews the literature on these two constructs as it relates to burn survivors. We also provide recommendations for clinicians on how to create an environment that fosters PTG and encourages patients to explore their spiritual and religious beliefs in the context of the trauma.

This single-participant case study highlights the clinical experiences of a Muslim American hijabi (adherence to Islamic dress code) woman, with emphasis on the cross-cultural and religious components that influence her mental illness. This case conceptualization illustrates body-image issues that Muslim women can face in western cultures, despite their religious values regarding the covering of the body and modest dress. Biopsychosocial factors are indicated to influence an eating disorder including, and are not limited to, family influences, genetics, cultural pressures, and life events.
