Background: Fluid and electrolyte balance are critical for the maintenance of life and homeostasis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practice in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. Methods: Quasiexperimental design [pre, post, and follow-up tests] was utilized to fulfill the purpose of the study. Settings: This study was conducted at Pediatric Intensive Care Units, Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. Sample: A convenient sample of fifty nurses was represented in this study from January to August 2021. Two tools were used for collecting data. First tool: Fluid balance monitoring questionnaire consisted of two parts to assess nurses' knowledge regarding fluid and electrolyte balance and the second tool: Fluid balance monitoring audit to assess nurses' practice of fluid balance monitoring. Results: The mean age and standard deviations of studied nurses were 28±6.9 and 34% of them were aged between 25 and 30 years old. Half of the study sample [50%] had a bachelor's degree. On the pre-test, there were moderately adequate knowledge and incompetent practices of fluid balance monitoring. In conclusion: The study revealed that implementation of a health education program has a positive outcome on the advance of nurses' knowledge and practices about fluid measurement and maintenance. Recommendation: Ongoing in-service education programs must be implemented at Intensive Care Units in order to boost nurses' knowledge, practice, and outcome.

Purpose A quality management system (QMS) is defined as interacting activities, methods and procedures used to monitor, control and improve service quality. The purpose of this paper is to describe the QMS status using the Quality Management System Index (QMSI) in hospitals affiliated to Shahid Beheshti Medical Sciences University in Tehran, Iran. Design/methodology/approach In this cross-sectional study, 28 hospitals were investigated. A validated 46-item questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, independent student’s t-test and regression analysis. Findings The mean QMSI score was 18.4: 15.3 for public and 20.9 for non-public hospitals (p=0.001). The lowest (1.96) and the highest (2.14) scores related to “Quality policy documents” and “Quality monitoring by the board,” respectively. The difference between public and non-public hospitals was significant in all nine QMSI dimensions (p=0.001). The QMSI score was higher in non-public and small hospitals than in public and large ones (p=0.05). Originality/value Most QMS studies come from developed countries, and there is no systematic information about the mechanisms and processes involved in implementing QMS in developing countries like Iran. This is the first study on Iranian hospital QMS using a newly developed tool (QMSI), and results showed that QMS maturity in these hospitals was relatively good, but the non-public hospitals status (private and charity) was far better than public hospitals.

To explore the concept of effective shift handover in critical care settings. Ineffective handover is one of the leading causes of adverse events in healthcare settings. Nursing shift handover in the intensive care unit (ICU) is more complex and detailed than in other in‐patient wards due to the complexity of medical issues experienced by ICU patients. It is, therefore, critical that nurses be able to conduct handover effectively. Despite the importance of handover, the definition and attributes of effective handover are not clearly understood. Walker and Avant's eight‐step approach to concept analysis. Effective handover in nursing is an interactive process between two nurses, resulting in the direct transfer of adequate patient‐specific recent information in a manner that creates a shared understanding of information. Its defining attributes are (1) content‐related and (2) process‐related attributes. The antecedents of effective handover are organizational support, interpersonal relationship, and work environment. Its consequences include patient and nurse satisfaction, improved care, and continuity of care. Empirical referents include several tools developed to measure some of the effective handover attributes. The definition provides a connotative meaning and is the first step toward concept validation and instrument development to measure effective handover practice in the ICU.
