A Stochastic Frontier Analysis Approach for Estimating Market Power in the Major US Meat Export Markets

Abstract: The present study estimates the degree of market power in the major U.S. beef and pork export destinations. The recently developed stochastic frontier (SF) estimator is used. Estimations of market and time specific Lerner indices are provided. Balanced panel data between 1980-2011 were employed. The average Lerner index is 39% for the U.S. beef exports and is the highest in the markets of ASEAN, Hong Kong/China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. For the U.S. pork exports, the average Lerner index is 16% and is th… Show more

“…New technologies and innovations [1,2], related to the Industry 4.0 idea in the energy sector [3,4], are genuinely powering the digital economy [5,6]. Industry 4.0 is a concept related to the use of automation [7], data processing [8], and data exchange [9], employed especially in practice in car charging stations, its infrastructure [10,11], and energy distribution networks [12,13].…”

“…In this scientific paper, the availability of the charging stations was also calculated with the use of Equation (3). Equation (3), the number of charging stations per 1 person (NCSP), and Equation ( 4), the number of people per 1 charging station (NPCS), were calculated in this study:…”

“…The issue of market power is highly correlated to policy study. There are many articles estimating the market power effects of the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act (LMRA) in the U.S. beef industry [20,[31][32][33]. These prove that the market power exertion of fed cattle markets was greater in the years after the program was implemented than before.…”
