Background: Regulation of the ER Ca 2ϩ sensor STIM1 and its association with the plasma membrane channel Orai1 to activate store-operated Ca 2ϩ entry (SOCE) remains incompletely understood. Results: cAMP induced plasma membrane translocation of STIM1 in islet cells without concomitant SOCE activation. Conclusion: STIM1 translocation alone is insufficient to activate SOCE. Significance: This study describes novel interaction between the components of cAMP and Ca 2ϩ signaling cascades.
