Intercalated research projects are a popular undertaking for medical students. Such projects can provide students with a wealth of valuable experiences and the chance to develop new skills that will be highly beneficial to their future careers. Intercalated research projects however represent a very different challenge to other aspects of medical education, with distinct expectations and requirements of students in order for success to be achieved. In this article, the author compiled twelve tips based on current literature and their experiences carrying out an intercalated research project. These tips will help ensure medical students are well prepared before commencing their intercalated research project, in order to maximise the benefits of the opportunities presented to them.
