A Study of Central Corneal Thickness in Glaucoma and Nonglaucoma Patients in a West African Population

Abstract: There was no significant difference between mean CCT of cases and controls in the right eye (P = 0.08), but there was a weakly significant difference in the CCT of the left eye (P = 0.05). Also, there was no correlation between cup-to-disc ratio and CCT.

“…Similar findings have been reported from clinic-based studies among black glaucoma patients in Ethiopia (518.68 ± 32.92 μm) [17], Uganda (516.19 ± 39.95 μm); [18] and African Americans (518 μm) [19]. Among patients with glaucoma in West Africa, findings ranged from 524.28 μm to 536.91 μm [12, 20, 21]. …”

“…This thinner average of CCT was similar between populations living in SSA and African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans [43]. But despite of the most of these finding, there was one study led in the West African population, concluded that CCT may predict the development of glaucoma; however, it may not be a powerful predictor at the ranges of CCT [30].…”

“…CCT for non glaucomatous subjects 1637 non-glaucomatous patients drawn from 5 sub-Saharan countries (South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia) were assessed after collection of the articles from Pubmed database, Google, Embase [9,10,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30] The largest cluster of average CCT for non-glaucomatous African subjects was between 512.4 and 550 µm.…”
