Introduction: Dermatoglyphic study is undoubtedly the most reliable, convenient and acceptable method of individual identification since the fingerprint pattern persist same throughout the life and no two individual has similar pattern. Both blood group and dermatoglyphic pattern have genetic inheritance so an attempt has been made to analyze their correlation with gender and blood group of an individual. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in 200 students (105 male and 95 female), aged 17to 27 years, with prior knowledge of their blood group, of Gandaki Medical College, Pokhara, Nepal. The fingerprint patterns of both hands were recorded and patterns were observed. Results: Loop was the most common pattern registering 51.8% followed by whorls, arches and composite in both genders. Frequency of loop was higher in both male and female. Frequency of whorl was comparatively higher in male (41.3%) compared to female (38.8%). Similarly arch was more common in female (9.89%) than in male (5.05%).Frequency of loop was highest in all blood groups in both male and female; followed by whorls, arches and composite. Both loops and whorls were highest in individual with O+ blood group. Arch was found to be highest in B+ subjects. Conclusion: There was no significant association between distribution of fingerprint patterns, blood group and gender and thus prediction of gender and blood group of a person is not possible based on his fingerprint pattern.

Introduction: The Palmprint, a dermatoglyphic marker, is defi¬ned as the print of a palm, which is mainly composed of the palmar flexion creases and ridges. The palm print patterns and blood groups are unique, stable and remain unchanged throughout the life. Hence, the present study was undertaken to investigate association between Palm print patterns and ABO and Rh blood groups in both the genders of the North Indian population. Material and Method: The sample for the cross- sectional study was consist of palmprints from 300 (Male: female 1:1,150 each) medical students of North India. The palmprints of both the hands of the subjects were recorded by the ink and roller method. Result: The distribution of palmprint patterns of both hands showed a high frequency of Category 5, moderate of category 4, small of category 6 & 3 and none of category 1 &2. The study also show gender discrimination as category 5 was more common in males while Category 4 was more common in females ( P -value for Right hand is.012 and for Left hand is <.001). Positive correlation was found between palm print patterns and blood group but was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The findings of present study revealed statistically significant sexual dimorphism in the study population. Palm print patterns also showed a positive correlation with ABO blood groups.

Dactylography or Fingerprint is one of the oldest reliable biometric indicators. Dermatoglyphics (fingerprint/ dactylography) is derived from the Greek word "Derma = Skin, Glyphe = Carve." Fingerprint patterns are unique in each individual and the chance of two persons having identical fingerprints is about one in 64 thousand million. Fingerprints represent the impressions left by the friction ridges of our finger.Out of many blood grouping systems available, ABO and Rh systems are the most important and are considered for the present study. Due to the immense potential of fingerprints as an effective method of identification an attempt has been made in the present work to analyse their correlation with blood group and Iris colour of an individual. This study was carried out on 200 medical students (100 male and 100 female) having different ABO blood groups and belonging to different age groups. All the 10 fingers fingerprints were taken and divided into loops, whorls, arches and composite. Iris colour recorded by direct illumination by Slit lamp examination. Results shown that loops pattern being most common followed by whorls, arches and composite. Brown colored iris being more predominant in both the genders than green and blue colored iris.Loops are predominant in males whereas whorls and arches are seen more in females. Composites being in same proportion in both sexes. Most of the subjects with loops pattern were belongs to O positive blood group and having brown iris colour followed by B positive. Among loops ulnar loops were more predominant than radial loop. Among all subjects, green colored iris recorded in 5 subjects, out of 5, 4 had loop fingerprint patter & another one subject had arch pattern. Blue colored iris recorded in two subjects with loop pattern.
