“…In addition, povidone‐iodine has a prolonged duration of activity (Shelanski and Shelanski, 1956). Among others, Joress (1962) and Lilly and Lowbury (1971) have shown it to be effective in skin disinfection; in lowering the infection rate in the treatment of burns (Georgiade et al , 1962; Wynn‐Williams and Monballiu, 1965; Linkner et al , 1972), and in preparation of the skin before orthopaedic and general surgery (Rabinowitz, 1961; Sellers and Newman, 1971). In the United States, Levine (1970), in a preliminary investigation showed that ‘Betadine’ antiseptic solution, which contained povidone‐iodine 10%, prevented pruritus and skin exfoliation when it was applied before the application of occlusive dressings or plaster of paris casts.…”
