A Study of Efficacy and Safety Profile With Sub Dermal Single Rod Contraceptive Implant Implanon

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:The development of sub dermal contraceptive implant has been an important improvement in current contraceptive technology and to a good alternative to offer well established contraceptive method. Hormonal implant must show high efficacy, high acceptability and rapid return of fertility after removal by maintaining a sustained release of progesterone, the contraceptive effect of the implant can be obtained with a much smaller daily dose than when administering the same steroid by an oral or intramu… Show more

“…Implanon NXT is a single-rod long-acting subdermal hormonal contraceptive for 3-years of use, containing 68 mg etonogestrel [12]. It is made of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer with a length of 40 mm and a diameter of 2 mm [13]. Jadelle is a set of two flexible cylindrical implants consisting of dimethylsiloxane/ methyl vinyl siloxane copolymer core enclosed in thinwalled silicone tubing [14].…”

“…The APR of insertables typically is achieved in under 30 min [10,20,21], and can be performed in an officebased procedure [18] by unspecialized clinicians, e.g., a nurse or primary care physician, after specific but brief APR training [22]. As general anesthesia is not needed [23], and often even local anesthesia is unnecessary [24], the whole APR procedure is simplified and less risky compared to implantables.…”

“…As general anesthesia is not needed [23], and often even local anesthesia is unnecessary [24], the whole APR procedure is simplified and less risky compared to implantables. In addition, the availability of a specific set of sterile, disposable tools enables standardization of APR to ensure fast and accurate application and positioning at the appropriate skin depth [22], as well as removal at the end of device life. Due to the low risk of tissue damage in the vicinity of the APR site, image guidance (e.g., via ultrasound) is not typically required during 2 An uninfected operative wound in which no inflammation is encountered and the alimentary, genital, respiratory or urinary tracts are not entered [13].…”
