A study of feeding in Scrobicularia plana

Abstract: Deposit-feeding by Scrobicularia planaScrobiculariaplana (Da Costa) along the mud surface occurs throughout the period of low tide if the water table remains at the surface. The rate of deposit-feeding is unaffected by the time after emersion at low tide except where excessive drainage prevents feeding along the mud surface, in which case it is possible that animals feed from the sides of their burrows at or below the level of the water table.

“…Variability of the feeding methods between the deposit and filter feedings is also known in other estuarine macrobenthos such as spionid polychaetes (Taghon et al 1980, Taghon & Greene 1992, bivalves (Hughes 1969, Olafsson 1986, and a gastropod (Kamimura & Tsuchiya 2004).…”

“…Diet information for almost all the compartments here identified had to be obtained from the literature (e.g. Hughes, 1969;Costa, 1982;Pihl, 1985;Zajac, 1986;Sprung, 1994;Ansell et al, 1999;Azeiteiro et al, 1999;Cunha et al, 2000;Pardal et al, 2000, see Appendix A). Initially, all prey items of each compartment of macrofauna and fishes were listed, along with their corresponding percentages of occurrence.…”

“…The present study evaluates the success of a restoration project implemented in the Mondego estuary, focussing on the dynamics of Scrobicularia plana, a long-lived deposit-feeding bivalve species, living in muddy to sandy sediments (Hughes, 1969(Hughes, , 1970aGuelorget and Mazoyer-Maye´re, 1983;Essink et al, 1991;Sola, 1997;Guerreiro, 1998). Long-term data sets (8 years) are required in order to capture slow ecological processes (e.g.…”
