A Study of Flow Analysis for a Double-Suction Centrifugal Pump

Abstract: Flow analysis was carried out for a double-suction centrifugal pump. An impeller-only model and a full pump model were used to simulate the velocity and the pressure field of the pump. Pump head and efficiency were calculated with flow rate in order to obtain general performance of the pump. The calculation results were compared to the experimental data, and satisfactory results were obtained. Also, the velocity and the pressure field of this pump were analyzed for the rated point and off-design points. Change… Show more

“…The time step for transient calculation was set to 1/4500 s, corresponding to the time interval for the impeller to travel 2°. The target of maximal residual in each step was set as 5 × 10 − 4 with a maximal iteration of 20. The total calculation time was 0.6 s, corresponding to the time of 15 impeller revolutions.…”

“…However, the hypothesis of uniform inflow condition is inevitably applied in pump design, 2 resulting in the operating efficiency usually being lower than the design efficiency, especially for double-suction pumps. 3,4 Inflow distortion behaves as strong shear flow with large-gradient velocity, reverse flow near the shroud, and prewhirl. [5][6][7] These flows cause large deviations between experiment performance and actual performance, cavitation, increased pressure fluctuation, vibration, operating noise, and decreased blade service life.…”

“…Also, the flow characteristics in the turbine mode were explored. Kyung et al [19] investigated the velocity and pressure distributions in the impeller in a double-suction centrifugal pump at different flow rates with an impeller-only model and a full pump model. Fernández et al [20] studied the effect of inlet nonuniformities by comparing the features of the flow patterns near the volute tongue.…”
