A Study of Glass Beads From the Hallstatt C–d From Southwestern Poland: Implications for Glass Technology and Provenance*

Abstract: Eighty-one samples taken from 68 glass beads found in southwestern Poland on sites of the Lusatian culture from the Hallstatt C and Hallstatt D subphases were analysed by EPMA. A subsample of 18 of these were additionally subjected to analysis by means of LA-ICP-MS in order to validate the results obtained by EPMA. Some glass was made using mineral soda and some using plant ash rich in sodium. Both high-magnesium soda-lime glass (HMG) and low-magnesium soda-lime glass (LMG) were identified. A large number of s… Show more

“…The first century bc date accords with a peak in tin opacification in prehistoric Europe (Henderson , 36); there is, however, evidence that tin opacification was used as early as the sixth century bc in Eastern Europe (Purowski et al . ). The use of tin opacification in Chinese high‐potassium glasses hints potentially at an ‘opacifying’ independent invention.…”

“…En el centro y sur de Europa se conocen desde la 1ª Edad del Hierro, en contextos de Hallstatt C y D (Purowski et al, 2012;Conde et al, 2013). En la Península Ibérica, también se han hallado vidrios LMG elaborados con natrón, como en la necrópolis de la ciudad de Numancia (García-Heras et al, 2005).…”

“…Matrix corrections were applied using the CAMECA ‘PAP’ procedure (see, e.g., Purowski et al . ; ). The advantage of the EPMA method is that BSE images can be made, allowing for analyses of the chemical composition of raw materials in precisely selected spots.…”
