“…Indeed, S. japonica should be harvested when it is immature ( Liao and Cheng, 2012 ). Compared with the bud (S2–S3), the fully developed flower (S4–S5) has obvious advantages in terms of yield, but the total flavonoid content and biological activities are diminished ( Cholak et al, 2016 ; Wang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Abudayeh et al (2015) found that the essential oil components of S. japonica were affected by the harvest period and that the volatile oil content was highest in the buds. The lectin activity and protein content of S. japonica also decrease as the flower buds mature ( Cholak et al, 2016 ). Our previous study showed that the flavonoid content in S. japonica extract varied across the five flower-maturity stages, along with variations in antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition activities ( Wang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The FFB-SJ was harvested in July. According to appearance, morphology, and color [38,40,41] (Figure 1), the FFB-SJ was sorted into the following five maturity stages: i) original bud stage (S1), green closed bud with a length of 2.8 -3.8 mm; ii) plump bud stage (S2), overall green and showing an absence of cracking or showing the presence of slight cracking at the top of the calyx, with a length of 4.0 -5.1 mm; iii) budcracking stage (S3), the entire length from the torus to the top was 4.5 -6.0 mm, and the slightly exposed white or pale yellow tip was less than 1.5 mm; iv) late bud stage (S4), the entire length from the torus to the top was 9.0 -11.0 mm, with pale yellow petals that were close to half of the overall length; and v) blooming stage (S5), the entire length from the torus to the top of the corolla was 11.0 -14.0 mm. Petals are light yellow, and either vexilla are separated from other petals or all petals are separated.…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that the phytochemical component rutin hydrolyzes to quercetin by rutindegrading enzymes in the blossoms of S. japonica. [37] Cholak et al [38] reported that the protein content and lectin activity decrease during the maturation of FFB-SJ. This means that the hemostatic function will be influenced by the harvesting period.…”
