A Study of Nanomaterial Dispersion in Solution by Wet-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

Abstract: Preparation of nanomaterial dispersion or nanofluids requires good characterization techniques, including particle size and morphological measurements. A reliable and straight-forward process to characterize and quantify the degree of dispersion and agglomeration is needed. A wet-cell transmission electron microscope (TEM) technique has been developed to make comparisons between sonicated and hand-shaken solutions of both aluminum oxide nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In each case, the wet-ce… Show more

“…403 SiN window grids were fabricated by binding commercially available SiN wafers with polymer O-rings. 404 The polymers greatly simplified the cell fabrication, decreasing the assembly times down to 10 to 15 min, and allowing the re-use of the wet cells. SiN TEM grids are currently commercially available with electrochemistry and heating packages, making them the most popular option among the different TEM liquid cells.…”

“…2A. 31 The design utilizes SN window wafer grids readily available in the market, instead of homemade ones. A custombuilt metal holder was used to hold the grids, and several O-rings were used to seal the liquid from the vacuum in the TEM chamber.…”

“…A JEOL 2010 LaB 6 TEM system was used to test the design; moreover, different samples, such as Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles in DI water and multi-walled carbon nanotubes in DI water, were imaged, demonstrating the versatility and reliability of the technique. 31 The image resolution in the abovementioned trends is limited by the thickness of the SN window and the liquid layer, mainly due to electron scattering. 32 Another major trend is using low vapor pressure liquids such as ionic liquids (ILs), 33 and studying the liquid-solid systems in TEM.…”

“…We have also used polystyrene microspheres at the corners of a microchip as a spacer (de Jonge et al, 2009). If flow is not needed, then a sealed device can be used (de Jonge et al, 2007; Franks et al, 2008; Liu et al, 2008; Peckys et al, 2009; Huang et al, 2012). Others have included an additional liquid reservoir in the microchip assembly (Zheng et al, 2009 b ).…”
