A study of squeezing flow

Abstract: The problem of the squeezing of a film of liquid between two parallel surfaces is considered. Approximate expressions are deduced for the instantaneous distribution of velocity within the fluid and the reaction on the surfaces. These are obtained by an approximate iterative solution of the continuity and momentum equations. The radial pressure distribution in a squeezed film is found to be due partly to the action of viscosity and partly to inertia effects. The latter cause the relationship between the reactio… Show more

“…Brindley et al [39] have argued that-within the lubrication approximation-the assumption of parallel material planes is only justified for fluids with a power-law viscosity function. The effect of inertia on squeeze flow of Newtonian fluids was considered, among others, by Jackson [69] and by Hamza and MacDonald [53].…”

“…Earlier studies of squeezing flow are based on Reynolds equation. The inadequacy of Reynolds equation in the analysis of porous thrust bearings and squeeze films involving high velocity has been demonstrated by Jackson [13], Ishizawa [14], and others. The general study of the problem with full Navier-Stokes equations involves extensive numerical study requiring more computer time and larger memory.…”

“…The problem of unsteady squeezing of viscous fluid between two plates occurs in unsteady loading. In the light of this application, many researchers have explored the effect of inertia on the bearing characteristics [4]. Chandrashekharan and Ramanaiah [5] investigated unsteady flow between two parallel rectangular and circular plates by considering all inertia terms and combined effect of inertia force is studied.…”
