A study of the gas phase reactions of various cations with two derivatives of SF6; SF5CF3 and SF5Cl

Abstract: A selected ion flow tube apparatus was used to investigate the positive ion chemistry of two derivatives of SF 6 ; SF 5 CF 3 and SF 5 Cl. This represents the first investigation of the positive ion chemistry of SF 5 Cl, and much of the data on SF 5 CF 3 is being presented here for the first time. Rate coefficients and ion product branching ratios have been determined at room temperature (300 K) for reactions with the following twenty-two cations; with SF 5 Cl, all of which have rate coefficients significantly … Show more

“…This number is consistent with the ∆ f Hº 0 value for SF 4 Cl of -761 kJ mol -1 determined in previous SIFT work by our group on SF 5 Cl. 24 Another set of proposed neutrals is SF 4 + Cl, and if the well-established thermochemistry of these neutrals is used, this reaction is just exothermic. For the reaction with O 2 + , CHClF + can form with either ClOO or OClO on enthalpy grounds.…”

“…The rate constants for reactions of SF 5 CF 3 with a large number of small cations have been measured in a selected ion flow tube apparatus at 298 K [7,8]. Most reactions proceed with rate constants close to the capture limit.…”
