A study of the morphoanatomical characters of the leaves of Chamaecrista (L.) Moench sect. Apoucouita (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae)

Abstract: Little attention has been paid to species of Chamaecrista sect. Apoucouita (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), especially regarding anatomical studies. When only vegetative material is available, the identifi cation of such species may be diffi cult. Additionally, vegetative material of some species of C. sect. Apoucouita may be even harder to identify because they can resemble species of Inga Mill. (Leguminosae-Mimosoideae). Th e present study focused on recognizing morphoanatomical characters of leaves that are … Show more

“…(Boeger et al 2009, Sack & Scoffoni 2013. Despite this, the leaf venation pattern is an important character used for taxonomic distinction (Ellis et al 2009, Borrero et al 2016, Coutinho 2016. We highlight some conservative characters that can help in the identification of D. cuspidatum in the vegetative stage: both in the Atlantic forest biome and in the Amazon forest.…”

“…The Cerrado consists of a vegetal formation complex, ranging from 'campo limpo' (grassland) to 'cerradão' (woodland). The intermediate physiognomies ('campo sujo' a shrub savanna, 'campo cerrado'a wooded savanna, and 'cerrado sensu strict'a woodland) should be considered as ecotones [4]. Despite all this physiognomic variation, Cerrado can be characterized by no hydric limitation, low levels of soil nutrients, mainly N, and toxic levels of Al [5].…”

“…The mucilaginous nature of colleter secretion in Myrtoideae, confirmed by histochemical tests, is known in the literature for this secretory structure (Lersten & Horner 1968;Lersten 1974;Fahn 1979;Vitarelli & Santos 2009;Silva et al 2012). Its ecological function is to lubricate and protect buds in the initial phase of the development, especially against desiccation (Fahn 1979;Foster 1942;Paiva & Machado 2006;Barreiro & Machado 2007; Sheue et al 2012;Mayer et al 2013;Coutinho et al 2016). This function is essential for Cerrado species, which are exposed to excessive solar radiation and constant winds and can be understood as a factor that contributes to adaptation to this biome.…”
