A Study of the Mycoflora of Hatcheries

Abstract

Summary: An investigation into the mycoflora of two hatcheries was conducted. These hatcheries were beset with problems of increased mortality in chicks and fall of hatchability. Hatchery equipment like egg incubators, a hatcher and egg trolleys, walls of the incubator room and air of incubators, hatcher and incubator room were sampled in one hatchery. Whereas discarded eggs, faecal material from egg laying boxes and composite samples of litter from sheds were examined in another hatchery. The predominent fungi that were found in this study belonged to the genus Aspergillus. Aspergillus fumigatus Fresenius appeared to be responsible for reduced hatchability as this fungus in main was isolated from dead eggs and faecal material. Other fungi isolated in this study belonged to Penicillium oxalicum Currie and Thom, Paecilomyces variotii Bainier, Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn state of Cochliobolus lunatus Nelson and Haasis and Absidia corymbifera (Cohn) Saccardo & Trotter. Zusammenfassung: Die Untersuchungen wurden in zwei Brutanlagen durchgeführt, in denen erhöhte Motalität der Kücken auftrat. In der einen Brutanlage wurden zahlreiche Einrichtungsgegenstände wie auch Luftproben untersucht. In der anderen Brutanlage betraf die Untersuchung Eier, Kotreste und Schmutzproben. Bei der Untersuchung wurden vor allem Pilze aus der Gattung Aspergillus gefunden. Aspergillus fumigatus fresenius schien in erster Linie für den Rückgang in der Kückenproduktion verantwortlich zu sein, da dieser Pilz vor allem von toten Eiern und aus Kotresten isoliert wurde. Andere isolierte Pilze waren Penicillium oxalicum Currie and Thom, Paecilomyces variotii Bainier, Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn sowie Absidia corymbifera (Cohn) Saccardo und Trotter.
