A study of the relative efficiency of Chinese ports: a financial ratio‐based data envelopment analysis approach

Abstract: This research examines the relative efficiency of 11 major Chinese ports by using an innovative adopted version of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA is a non-parametric approach to weigh the inputs=outputs and measure the relative efficiency of decision-making units. This paper adopts an outputoriented version of DEA based on financial ratios in which no inputs are utilized. The new adopted DEA model provides a rounded judgement on port efficiency taking into consideration multiple financial ratios simultan… Show more

“…For example, DEA has been successfully explored in measuring the operational efficiency of banks (Favero and Papi, 1995;Pastor et al, 1997;Cacu et al, 2004;Angelidis and Lyroudi, 2006), container ports (Roll and Hayuth, 1993;Cullinane and Wang, 2006;Min and Park, 2008;Hung et al, 2010;Ablanedo-Rosas et al, 2010), public transit (Obeng, 1994;Nolan, 1995;Barnum et al, 2007;, manufacturing and logistics (He et al, 2006;Hasan et al, 2008;Sun and Ding, 2010), and others. Only a handful of studies have applied DEA to trucking industry.…”
