The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of window films on indoor environmental conditions and electricity consumption of air conditioning. The research focused on the performance of different window films (HAG, RG), taking into account variations from different building orientations. The findings of this research indicated that building orientation could significantly influence the duration of direct sunlight entering the interior, with the areas closer to the glass being more susceptible to the effects of outdoor temperature and solar radiation. The clear glass with heat-absorbing film (HAG) and reflective film (RG) both reduced the indoor temperature and indoor illuminance while increasing indoor comfort. The RG could accumulate less heat on the glass surface compared with the HAG. The glass temperature of the RG will be lower than the HAG. The electricity-saving ratios of the HAG were 1.4%, 1.9%, 1.4%, and 1.2%, respectively, when facing the east, south, west, and northwest orientations compared with the clear glass (OG). The electricity-saving ratios of the RG were 3%, 4.2%, 4.2%, and 10.3%, respectively.

Energy saving to diminish the power demand is more important when the substantial increase of electrical tariffs mount financial pressure on monthly budget of the end-users. The higher amount of electricity bill is one of the driving forces to investigate the epicentre of energy consumption at university campus. The objective of the study presented in paper is to test a strategy which could achieve significant reduction in electricity demand and associated bills. The load demand of all buildings and other entities at the campus have analysed using electricity bills of 30 months since 2016 to 2019. From the analysis of collected data, it is observed that HVAC units are responsible for most of electricity consumption at campus. Two split type HVAC units each of 2-ton capacity equipped with rotary compressor have considered in study to measure their energy intakes. Each unit has put in observation for three days with a thermostat setting of 23°C and 25°C. Assuming the similar atmospheric conditions, the HVAC unit at thermostat setting of 25°C has consumed average 147 Watts less power compare to the thermostat setting of 23°C. If the energy saving strategy by regulating set point of thermostat from 23°C to 25°C is deployed to the entire cooling load, it is estimated that hourly 5.33% energy and 0.081 kg of CO2 emission could be saved. This strategy would significantly diminish the electricity bills and support to clean environment. The findings of work are imperative to quantify the significant amount of energy demand reduction at the university campus.

Influence of Roller Blinds Shading Strategy on West and South Facing Buildings

This study investigates the impact of roller blinds as an energy-saving strategy in a subtropical climate. Lighting control experiments were performed on west-facing and south-facing windows in the Subtropical Performance-Testbed for Innovative Energy Research in Buildings Laboratory (SPINLab). This study accepts sunlight below 8000 lux and requires the indoor lighting of at least a reading of 500 lux. For the west-facing window experiment, the curtain energy-saving strategy implemented in this study resulted in 10% less energy consumption for air-conditioning and saved 90% of the lighting power consumption of the west facing window building. For the south-facing window experiment, we found that sunlight can fully supplement the lighting without adjusting the roller blinds because the window opening is different from the sunlight direction. In addition, the significant heat flux difference between the west-facing and south-facing windows experiments is also reflected in the energy consumption of the air conditioners.
