A study on knowledge and practice of neonatal resuscitation among nursing staff

Abstract: Birth asphyxia is a major cause of global neonatal death. One of the effective measures to prevent these deaths is to have skilled birth attendants in neonatal resuscitation. Several trials have shown that basic neonatal training can decrease neonatal deaths. My study is a cross-sectional observational study to determine the knowledge and practice about neonatal resuscitation among nursing staff working in up to secondary level care.

“…Another finding was training of health-care providers had a significant association with neonatal resuscitation. This is in line with studies done in Nigeria 17 and Malaysia 22 which indicates NR courses have been shown to improve NR skills. There is also evidence from facilitybased studies in low and middle-income countries that neonatal resuscitation training reduces neonatal mortality from birth asphyxia by 30%.…”

“…This is consistent with studies done in Northwest Ethiopia, 15 Nigeria, 16 and India. 17,18 But is in contrast with a study conducted in Afghanistan. 19 This discrepancy might be due to the availability of simulation-based training, regular updating training, and certification process before graduation in Afghanistan which does not exist in our country.…”

“…17 In resource-poor areas, nurses and midwives are the medical persons available to perform neonatal resuscitation. 18 Midwives and nurses are health care providers who are able to provide promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services at all levels of the health care system. Midwifery and nursing training in Ethiopia offered in three ways in both public and private science and higher educations: the diploma, the post-basic, and the direct BSc (Bachelor of Sciences) degree qualification in midwifery and nurse.…”
