Petrochemical complexes cause local air pollution and deteriorate the health of local residents by emitting a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study used a real-time analysis system to check the spatiotemporal distribution of pollutants discharged from petrochemical complexes. The proton transfer reaction time of a flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) was used as the measurement system. We performed measurements from July 21 to 26, 2021, mobile observations from July 21 to 22, 2021 and fixed observations from July 23 to 26, 2021. Meteorological analysis indicated that the prevailing wind direction was northwesterly, and pollutants discharged from industrial complexes in upwind regions have a high impact on villages in downwind regions. Mobile observation confirmed high concentrations in the section with the village hall, raw petroleum storage, landfill, and petrochemical production process. Methanol and acetone were in high concentrations at all times, and the concentrations of acetaldehyde, acetone, acetic acid, methylethyl ketone, and toluene increased once the production process started. The concentrations of benzene, known carcinogens, were particularly high, at times exceeding the acceptable threshold, indicating the need for improvement measures in the future.

Recently, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown to act as precursors of secondary organic particles that react with ultraviolet rays in the atmosphere and contribute to photochemical smog, global warming, odor, and human health risks, highlighting the importance of VOC management. In this study, we measured VOC concentrations in various contexts including industrial and residential areas of Bucheon, Korea, through mobile laboratory and proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry methods to determine winter VOC concentrations, visualized the data based on spatial information, and used the results to develop an air quality management plan. For this purpose, global information system (GIS)-based air quality data and various environmental variables were comprehensively reviewed to assess spatial and temporal concentrations in three dimensions rather than in tables and graphs. Among VOCs, the levels of toluene, methanol, and n+i-butene were relatively high, with average concentrations of 48.3 ± 67.2, 34.4 ± 102.7, and 32.6 ± 57.7 ppb, respectively, at the end of the working day. The highest concentrations occurred near the Ojeong Industrial Complex. Mobile pollution sources are also a major driver of VOCs, highlighting the necessity of comprehensively reviewing traffic variables such as road level, estimated traffic volume, and average speed when identifying hotspots of air pollution. GIS-based visualization analysis techniques will improve the efficiency of air quality management.

Paju City is located in the northwest of Gyeonggi-do, and its chemical emissions in 2020 were 1,287,917 kg, the 4th highest in Gyeonggi-do. In particular, the Munsan High-Tech Industrial Complex in Paju has LCD manufacturing plants and partner companies distributed in groups, and the volatile organic compounds used by these companies are causing many problems, such as causing bad odors, to the local community. In this sense, real-time analyzing equipment (proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry) was mounted on a vehicle for this study to look into the air quality around VOCs-using companies inside the High-tech Industrial Complex in Munsan, Paju from October 19 to October 21, 2020.According to measurement results, toluene was detected the most at 25.7 ppb, followed by carbon tetrachloride (17.6 ppb), ethylbenzene (17.2 ppb), and xylene (8.5 ppb), which demonstrates that there is a need to control these substances to resolve the issue with VOCs in the region. In particular, benzene designated as the air quality standard was detected at 1.0 ppb in some sites, which is below the threshold (1.5 ppb). However, it was detected at 2.1 to 4.4 ppb, exceeding the threshold in most sites. Thus, continuous monitoring is expected to keep VOCs under control in Paju Industrial Complex down the road, using real-time measuring equipment.
