Pressing the fingertips into surfaces causes skin deformations that enable humans to grip objects and sense their physical properties. This process involves intricate finger geometry, non-uniform tissue properties, and moisture, complicating the underlying contact mechanics. Here we explore the initial contact evolution of dry and hydrated fingers to isolate the roles of governing physical factors. Two participants gradually pressed an index finger on a glass surface under three moisture conditions: dry, water-hydrated, and glycerin-hydrated. Gross and real contact area were optically measured over time, revealing that glycerin hydration produced strikingly higher real contact area, while gross contact area was similar for all conditions. To elucidate the causes for this phenomenon, we investigated the combined effects of tissue elasticity, skin-surface friction, and fingerprint ridges on contact area using simulation. Our analyses show the dominant influence of elastic modulus over friction and an unusual contact phenomenon, which we call friction-induced hinging.

A long‐standing paradox in dermatology is why skin dehydration in the fingers can be triggered by repeated water exposure despite the action of water to hydrate skin tissue. Potential clues might be provided by identifying a mechanism through which water is held in the skin of the fingers. We speculated that this mechanism would be impaired after repeated water exposure. Here, we investigated whether there might be glabrous skin‐specific water‐holding machinery and whether this machinery might be impaired in dry skin/hand eczema. We examined this by using an impression‐mould technique, allowing for an accurate quantification of sweat gland/duct activity and optical coherence tomography. Unlike in hairy skin, sweat pores were rarely detected at the folds of the finger at baseline. Surprisingly, after water exposure, sweat pores at the folds opened and those at the ridges closed in healthy controls (HCs). Sweating in the dermal folds of the hands correlated with skin hydration, and decreased in dry skin/hand eczema, suggesting that its impairment may be one of the causes of dry skin. After repeated water exposure, basal sweating response at the folds was exhausted in patients with dry skin/hand eczema as well as HCs. This exhaustion was rescued by exposing individuals to high humidity. Basal sweating defects would be a target for dry skin/hand eczema. Maintaining basal sweating responses in the finger is the best preventive measures in achieving prevention of dry skin/hand eczema.

The nature of contact between human skin and external object (such as medical device, personal care device, fabric and so on) significantly influences the tactile perception and/or the functionality of the object. The contact mechanics depends strongly on the indenter properties and the mechanical properties of skin. Further, the topmost layer i.e., stratum corneum plays the most important role in tactile perception. In this study we use a representative volume element (RVE) based FEM model including the four layers of skin - stratum corneum, epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis - to simulate the contact mechanics between skin and a spherical indenter. The RVE model captures the mechanical properties of the microscopic constituents of the stratum corneum, which is the topmost layer of skin. We found that the RVE model can be used to simulate a variety of stratum corneum conditions (for example, dry and wet stratum corneum) and compositions. Using the RVE model in conjunction with an FEM model, we compute the frictional stress between skin and an indenter, as a function of stratum corneum microstructure, indentation depth, and local coefficient of friction. Both, the RVE model and the contact mechanics model predictions show good qualitative agreement with experimental findings in literature. Such studies will be very useful in in-silico design and optimization of devices that interact with skin. The current framework gives control over several parameters like skin microstructure, indenter or skin geometry and hence can be used to augment/substitute experimental testing.
