A study on the efficiency improvement of a passive oil damper using an MR accumulator

Abstract: This study describes the development, modeling, and testing of a hybrid damper for semi-active suspension. The goal of this study is to improve the performance of conventional passive oil dampers using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator that consists of a gas accumulator and an MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by means of control of the applied current in an MR device that is fitted to a floating piston that separates the gas and oil chamber. A small MR device is used to resist the … Show more

“…The main idea used in this proposed variable stiffness damper is based on the concept of controlling the accumulator movement to give effect to the damping performance. In a single rod damper, an accumulator is needed because there is a volume difference between the compression and extension chamber of the damper cylinder [8]. As a result, there are excess volume of hydraulic oil that need to be stored outside the main cylinder volume when the compression movement occurs.…”

“…Yun te al. [13] and Nguyen and Choi [14] presented a design optimization of the MR damper for vehicle suspension systems. In their optimization procedure, a local quadratic fitting technique using a golden-section algorithm is constructed by finite element method parametric design language.…”
