These days, the consideration of CO 2 as a feedstock has become the subject of more interest. The reutilization of CO 2 is already possible via cold plasma techniques operating at atmospheric pressure. A promising technology is the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In most cases DBDs exhibit a low energy efficiency for CO 2 conversion. However, several routes can be used to increase this efficiency and hence, the product formation. One of these routes is the packed-bed DBD configuration with porous beads inside the gap of the DBD, which also allows the coupling of plasma with catalysis. Catalysts can be introduced in such a configuration to exploit the synergistic effect between plasma and catalytically active surfaces, leading to a more efficient process. In this article, the dry reforming of methane (DRM) is studied, which aims to convert both CO 2 and CH 4 , another greenhouse gas, at the same time. The conversions and energy costs of the DRM process are investigated and compared in both the packed-bed DBD configurations containing catalysts (Co, Cu or Ni) and the classical DBD. The change in filamentary behavior is studied in detail and correlated with the obtained conversions using gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and using an oscilloscope. A characterization of the catalysts on the beads is also carried out. Both the CO 2 and CH 4 conversions are clearly increased with the plasma-catalysis. Moreover, CH 4 conversions as high as 90% can be obtained in certain conditions with copper catalysts.

To determine the viability of dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) for CO 2 dissociation and other highly endothermic reactions, we developed a DBD-relevant chemical model for CO 2 dissociation and constructed a new DBD apparatus. The chemical model compares the chemical reaction rates during the different stages of a DBD discharge to determine which reactions control the chemical kinetics of a CO 2 plasma. The model showed that during the breakdown/cascade phase of the DBD electron impact dissociation, electron attachment and electron vibrational excitation are the dominant reactions within the plasma. However, relaxation of the dissociated components within the discharge afterglow determines the final chemical state of the system. The model also showed that the relaxation path taken is highly dependent on the gas temperature and the amount of product gas built up in the system. VADER is a planar DBD experiment used to determine the effects of different system parameters on the dissociation of CO 2 . These experiments showed that CO 2 dissociation efficiencies and rates are highly affected by multiple parameters including the power supply driving frequency (the most efficient dissociation occurs at a resonant frequency determined by the chemical kinetics), the gas composition (efficiency and rate improved with the addition of argon) and the addition of a photocatalyst into the reaction chamber (a photocatalyst improved CO 2 dissociation efficiencies and rates in a plasma operating at higher driving frequencies). ________________________________ *

Sintered silicon carbide (SiC) was etched by a dielectric barrier discharge source. A high voltage bipolar pulse was used with helium gas for the plasma generation. One stable filament plasma was generated and could be used for SiC etching. As the processing gas (NF 3 ) mixing rate increased, the width and depth of the etching profile became narrower and deeper. The differentiated V-Q Lissajous method was used for measuring the capacitances (C eq ) of the electrode after the plasma turned on. The width of the etching profile was proportional to C eq . As the current peak value I smx of the substrate current increased, the volume removal rate of SiC increased. The etch depth was proportional to the ratio of I smx to C eq . Additionally, because of the different characteristics of the plasma disks on SiC substrate by the voltage polarity, the etching profile was unstable. However, in high NF 3 mixing process, the etching profile became stable and deeper.
