A study on the sealing performance of flange joints with gaskets under external bending using finite-element analysis

Abstract: The effect of external bending on flange joints in pipelines, pressure vessels, and pressure vessel nozzles is significant and difficult to assess. In the current work, the sealing performance of a gasketed flange joint under external bending has been studied by using a threedimensional finite element analysis, considering the non-linear material behaviour of the gaskets. Spiral wound gaskets and non-metallic gaskets with various sealing materials are considered. Results show that the allowable bending moment … Show more

“…The stress and sealing performance of flange joints under bending are analysed by experimental [8,9] and numerical [8,10] methods. The sealing performance of a gasketed flange joint under external bending for different gaskets has been studied using a three-dimensional finiteelement analysis (FEA) considering the non-linear material behaviour of the gaskets in previous work [10]. Siddique and Abid [11] have provided theoretical insight into mechanical stress and relieving modes for attenuation of residual stresses in flange joints by FEA.…”

“…Some investigations have been done to highlight the characteristics of an MMC flange connection 15,10 and the effect of the external bending moment on floating bolted flange joint. 11–14 However, very few researches have rarely reported about the effect of the external bending moment on an MMC flange connection.…”
