A2Bi2(SO4)2Cl4(A = NH4, K, Rb): achieving a subtle balance of the large second harmonic generation effect and sufficient birefringence in sulfate nonlinear optical materials

Abstract: A series of sulfates A2Bi2(SO4)2Cl4 (A = NH4, K, Rb) were synthesized, achieving a subtle balance of a large SHG effect and sufficient birefringence.

“…In recent years, besides the π-conjugated systems, nonπ-conjugated systems are considered as rich exploration systems for NLO materials attributable to their remarkable resistant absorption, diversity of noncentrosymmetric crystal structures, and easy growth of large single crystals [9][10][11][12][13][14]. Among the non-π-conjugated systems, phosphates have attracted much attention because of their strong rigidity, which contributes to improving the thermal and chemical stabilities [15].…”

“…To further enhance the NLO properties of sulfates, cations with a stereochemically active lone-pair (SALP, e.g., Sb 2+ , Bi 3+ , etc.) [43][44][45][46][47][48][49] can be introduced into the sulfate structures and the resultant compounds include RbSbSO 4 Cl 2 (2.7 × KDP), 43 CsSbF 2 SO 4 (3.0 × KDP), 44 A 2 Bi 2 (SO 4 ) 2 Cl 4 (A = NH 4 , K, Rb; 4.8, 5.5, and 5.3 × KDP), 45 etc. However, these materials may exhibit unwanted red-shifting of the UV cutoff edges.…”

“…Traditionally, the search of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials focused on borate systems [22], on the other hand, several NLO sulfate crystals were synthesized in recent years [23][24][25][26][27]. As to the Re 2 O 2 SO 4 oxysulfates, the crystal structure of Nd 2 O 2 SO 4 [28] was solved in the non-centrosymmetric (I222) space group and thus this class of compounds can be a candidate for NLO materials.…”
