A Successful Collagenase and Hyaluronic Acid Topical Use Combined with Antibiotic Therapy in the Treatment of Ulcerative Lesions Arising on Tattoo

Abstract: Tattooing is an ancient art widely practiced allover the world. The procedure used in making a tattoo consists of puncturing the dermis and depositing an amount of ink, but this decorative technique is not devoid of potential adverse effects, such as infectious complications, hypersensitivity reactions to pigments (lichenoid and granulomatous reactions), the development of benign or malignant tumors, and chronic dermatoses on site of the tattoo. We report an unusual complication which arose on a colorful tatto… Show more

“…Standard treatment uses a collagenase derived from Clostridium histolyticum (3,4). In our hospital, we experimented a combined use of hyaluronic acid (HA) and a new collagenase bacterial fermented sodium hyalunorate (0·2% w/w) salt obtained from non-pathogenic V. alginolyticus (>2·0 nkat1/g) (5,6).…”

“…Topical administration of collagenase has been shown to increase the effects of macrophage collagenase . This allows wound debridement by breaking down proteins that hold the eschar (dead and devitalised material) over the wound .…”

“…In our case, a young man with a leg ulcer produced by a stingray puncture has been periodically treated with detersion, disinfection, and debridement—obtained by the use of collagenase and hyaluronic acid and administration of antibiotic therapy. 11-14 This case report highlights how sometimes successful wound healing is possible even without surgery.…”

“…In 2012, Fioramonti et al used a collagenase product to preserve a colorful tattoo following onset of ulcerative lesions. 11 Use of collagenase increased wound debridement and facilitated the natural healing process. When topical therapy is not enough to solve the problem, an incision is often needed.…”
