A Survey and Analysis of Techniques for Player Behavior Prediction in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games

Abstract: While there has been much research done on player modeling in single-player games, player modeling in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) has remained relatively unstudied. In this paper, we survey and evaluate three classes of player modeling techniques: 1) manual tagging; 2) collaborative filtering; and 3) goal recognition. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses that each technique provides in the MMORPG environment using desiderata that outline the traits an algorithm should posses in… Show more

“…Another possible application of MOAG involves intelligently selecting choices in order to bring about the desired quest outcome. MOAG can be used to determine which choices a player is likely to make, which means that choices can be intelligently presented to the player in order to increase the probability that the player chooses that choice (Harrison et al. , 2015).…”

“…This technique uses computational methods to model players in games, with the aim of understanding, characterizing, and predicting player behaviors from cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects [83]. With the availability of large-scale data collected from MMOs, empirical game analytics based on player modeling have become widespread [12,22,25,68]. For example, studies on World of Warcraft (WoW) [6], one of the most popular MMORPGs, have shown successes in modeling player actions (trading, questing, dungeons, raiding, etc.)…”

“…to predict a player's in-game engagement [68] or progression [67]. Later, Harrison et al [22] compared various techniques to predict player achievements in WoW. Other works utilize player modeling for churn prediction in Tomb Raider [45] and Destiny [70] or game outcome prediction in League of Legends (LoL) [30,56,62] and Defense Against the Ancients 2 (DOTA2) [42,76].…”

“…As a primary focus of player-modeling research, goal recognition has been the subject of growing attention (Harrison et al 2015). Player goal recognition is the task of dynamically identifying the high-level objectives that a player is attempting to achieve based on a variety of evidence that is captured during interactions with a game.…”
