Aims and objectives To describe and explore characteristics associated with oral dietary supplement use and identify potential interactions with prescription medications in a sample of rural community‐dwelling older adults. Background Older adults use polypharmacy to help manage chronic diseases. Due to healthcare access disparities, rural older adults may consider dietary supplement use as an alternative approach to maintain health and manage disease. Oral dietary supplement use is expected to increase among ageing adults; placing them at risk for potential interactions and adverse events. Design A secondary analysis was conducted on oral dietary supplement, medication and health characteristic data collected on N = 138 participants. The original study was adherent to STROBE guidelines. Results Researchers found that 83% of the rural older adults used oral dietary supplements in addition to their prescribed medications. Participants took additional single‐dose vitamins along with their multivitamin; 57% took vitamin D, 52% took calcium, 15% took vitamin C and 13% took additional potassium and vitamin E. Participants also used oral dietary supplements with medications that had a potential for interaction. Conclusions Compared with national samples of older adults, a high percentage of rural older adults used oral dietary supplements in addition to their prescribed medications. In the rural setting, older adults are at risk for potential drug–oral dietary supplement interactions. Relevance to clinical practice Nurses can conduct vigilant medication reconciliation that includes documenting characteristics of oral dietary supplement use. Nurses can assist with providing appropriate dietary supplements education that promotes patient knowledge and prevent inappropriate use; particularly when caring for older adults from rural settings.

Usually supplement is essential and fundamental components for ensure and creating the human body, also drugs seem to survey the life of each individual and ensure the wellbeing for a long life aimed most of illness, but in case nourishment sedate interaction ignored since of information shortage almost it or any reason maybe lead to futile of medicine for the patients or cause life threatening condition because of that, one of the most significant ethical point in every health care setting in the world is patient's safety; and the care for patients must be improved in every country to prevent complication of interaction between food and drug. The main objective of this cross-sectional study has been conducted to assess the nurses' knowledge regarding food-drug interaction (FDI) at the intensive care in both of Shar and emergency hospitals in the Slemani city, the data were collected during the period of October up to the end of December. Non-probability, (purposive sample) of 78 nurses at both hospitals, a questionnaire was designed according to literatures and books regarding FDI which contained 25 items, 8 items for demographic characteristics, and 17 items concerning FDI. The validity of the questionnaire was given to a panel of 7 experts, a pilot study was carried out to check the reliability of the questionnaire which determined through the use of stability reliability (test-retest) approach which was estimated as r = 0.81. The data were collected through the interviewing of the study sample and analyzed through the using of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS, version 23, and analyzed through the application of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The findings of the present study conclude that more than half of nurses had low knowledge and none of them had high level of knowledge, also there is no significant association between the levels of knowledge with age, gender, educational level, years of experience and working place. The study suggested extends the knowledge of nurses regarding the FDI, by training courses from clinical pharmacologists.

Herbal products and supplements are a branch of CAM, and are consumed for several health purposes, and mostly without a medical advice. To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward these herbals, we conducted a college-based survey, distributed to 334 students of dentistry and pharmacy in a university in United Arab Emirates. The survey included questions about the herbals used, purpose of consuming them, drug-herbals interaction, and safety of herbal consumed. Among the sample, only 5% of students didn't use any herbals, at all. A high percentage of respondents believed that herbals are able to treat some medical conditions, while a weaker agreement was obtained regarding the safety of herbals. These results indicate that health sciences college students need to be counseled about the proper use of herbals.
