A survey of digital signal processing education

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to suggest a more rigorous and complete DSP curriculum that will meet corporate needs to produce "industry ready" DSP engineers from the ranks of students with undergraduate degrees. A study of many Digital Signal Processing (DSP) curriculums across the world was conducted to determine the level of DSP theory, application, and lab exercise activity that was currently being offered to engineering students. Curriculum guidelines on DSP from the ACM/IEEE Joint Task Force on Computer… Show more

“…Table 7 summarizes the responses obtained from the 11 students (out of 15) that participated in the questionnaire. The questions obtaining maximum agreement among the students were Q4(8) and Q9(8), followed by Q1 (7), Q3 (7), and Q5 (7). According to these questions, the use of SART3D improved their engagement in the classroom (Q4).…”

“…The perceptions of instructors confirm that quite often students get bogged down with the theory without seeing the applications, affecting adversely their motivation for studying signal processing courses . As a result, it is widely accepted that successful signal processing courses should link theory and practice together in a coherent and comprehensive way . This goal is not only aimed at improving student understanding of the theory but also allowing students to fully appreciate the applicability and effectiveness of signal processing in practice …”

“…Today many products are embedded with DSP microprocessors and therefore engineers require a thorough understanding and depth of knowledge of DSP. The desire of engineers for education in DSP is acknowledged in [1] and the need for a DSP course in a tertiary electrical engineering degree program is emphasized in [2].…”
