A Survey of Dynamic Bandwidth Assignment Schemes for TDM-Based Passive Optical Network

Abstract: In time division, multiple access (TDMA)-based passive optical network (PONs), a dynamic bandwidth assignment (DBA) is necessary for efficient utilization of the available bandwidth of the upstream link. An efficient DBA scheme can improve the upstream performance of a traffic class of an ONU in two ways. First, it can increase the bandwidth assignment to it by efficiently utilizing the available bandwidth. Secondly, it can reduce the channel and frame idle time by increasing the polling frequency and by assig… Show more

“…One extension of the GIANT algorithm is the Efficient Bandwidth Utilization (EBU-DBA) for XG-PON system that presents remarkable improvement in the delay [9]. Allocation with Colorless Grant (IACG) DBA scheme shows higher delay and frame loss than EBU and lower delay than GIANT [28], [29]. One DBA scheme, GPON Redundancy Eraser Algorithm for Long-Reach (GREAL), does not utilize the excess bandwidth to support added traffic [30] and has higher delay that EBU and IACG algorithms [28].…”

“…New techniques are therefore required to meet these demands and solve the challenges that may arise [1,3,4]. The rapid and expanding demands for multimedia and bandwidth services have shifted research attention to the Passive Optical Network (PON) [5,6]. PON is a network based on a fibre-optic structure which provides a much higher bandwidth in the access network than traditional networks based on copper [7,8].…”

“…The existing single-threaded polling algorithm for VPON is not suitable for multi-mode coexistence VPON based on long-reach access networks [14,15]. Compared with single thread, the multi-thread scheme is more suitable for VPON based on LR-PON [16]. By building multiple transmission channels between OLT and ONU, the bandwidth allocation algorithm based on multithreaded polling mechanism can take advantage of idle time slots caused by high RTT [3].…”
