A Survey of Industrial Organic Chemists: Understanding the Chemical Industry’s Needs of Current Bachelor-Level Graduates

Abstract: A survey was conducted of companies from the chemical industry with an emphasis on the organic division. The data include results from 377 respondents from more than 100 different companies. More than half of all undergraduates gain fulltime work in the chemical industry or government after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. This article sheds light on these topics: (i) the current chemical methods, techniques, and instrumentation used in industry; (ii) which attributes or abilities chemical com… Show more

“…Applied chemical laboratory training is a key aspect of chemical education because it can strengthen the connection between academia and industry and help students study fundamental chemical theories in a hands-on setting. However, under circumstances when students have no access to a lab, special arrangements are required for students to receive these laboratory trainings, such as virtual teaching, or sending experimental kits to students to perform practical work at home. The global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 provided such an example. During this outbreak, a majority of the in-person university teaching activities were suspended for at least one semester in the United States and other countries, including laboratory classes. To respond, we transformed our lab modules “on-line” for a novel interdisciplinary laboratory class covering areas of chemical engineering, chemistry, and biopharmaceutical processing.…”
