A survey of knowledge and application of mechanical thromboprophylaxis among the medical staff of intensive care units in North China

Abstract: A wide gap exists with regards to the knowledge and application of mechanical thromboprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) between the medical staff of our country and abroad. Strengthened standardized training may help medical staff improve their understanding and application of mechanical thromboprophylaxis. Amelioration of concerns regarding IPC and GCS could help increase the rate of mechanical thromboprophylaxis for VTE, reduce the occurrence of VTE in ICUs and improve the prognosis of these critic… Show more

“…erefore, it is extremely important to find effective physiotherapy. At present, the commonly used schemes include gradient pressure elastic socks (graduated compression stockings, GCS) and intermittent inflatable pressurization device (IPC) [8]. In clinical application, improper application of IPC can lead to peroneal nerve injury and even interventricular septum syndrome; improper pressure gradient of elastic socks can cause venous stasis and even induce blisters, skin ulceration, and so on.…”

“…DVT's basic physical prevention program includes air pressure massage of both lower limbs with the aid of intermittent inflatable pressurization (intermittent pneumatic compression, IPC) device [8]. Contraindications should be excluded: congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, local skin ulceration, lower limb ischemic vascular disease, and so on.…”

“…Recent meta-analyses showed that mechanical prophylaxis is effective but there is a risk of pressure injury [ 33 , 36 , 37 ]. Nevertheless, a study in China showed that 25% of ICU medical staff never heard of mechanical DVT prophylaxis [ 38 ]. In addition, another review indicated that DVT prophylaxis is often overlooked [ 39 ].…”

“…It found that approximately 52.30% of all surveyed medical staff often practiced mechanical thromboprophylaxis. However, 25% of the included staff had never heard of mechanical thromboprophylaxis [ 45 ]. There is a need to remove concerns regarding IPC and GCS and properly educate the staff as these measures could help decrease VTE incidence in ICUs and improve the prognosis of critically ill patients by increasing the use of mechanical thromboprophylaxis.…”
