A survey of Marchantiales from Madagascar

Abstract: Based on the authors' recent collections and on older herbarium specimens (PC, TAN, EGR), the species of Marchantiidae (Marchantiopsida, Marchantiophyta) of Madagascar are reported with their description based on Malagasy specimens. A distribution map for each taxon is provided. Among the fifteen taxa identified, six are newly recorded for the island, including a new synonymy: Asterella coronata (Steph.) H.A.Mill = Asterella bachmannii (Steph.) S.W. Arnell. Most of Marchantiidae live in xeric areas (Riccia spe… Show more

“…Several thalloid liverwort genera, and many moss genera, have species with considerable drought tolerance, with examples in both plant groups of individuals withstanding continuous desiccation for more than 20 years (Breuil-Sée, 1993;Stark et al, 2017). As the plants of liverwort genera such as Riccia and Targionia dry out, the sides of the thallus roll over the dorsal surface so that it is covered by the darkly pigmented ventral scales and rhizoids [see Figure 4 and Reeb et al (2018) for examples]. This forms a "capsule" that can recover and renew growth even after extended periods without additional water.…”

“…R2R3-MYB activation of flavonoid production in the same species during abiotic stress has also been delineated (Albert et al, 2018). Some species of other thalloid liverworts roll their thalli over the dorsal surface when dried out, so that dark pigmented ventral side is left exposed (Reeb et al, 2018;Davies et al, 2020), whereas some desiccation-tolerant leafy liverworts also tend to be dark pigmented (Vitt et al, 2014). The adaptive value of these pigmentations of assumed auronidin type is still subject for debate, light screening, ROS scavenging, strengthening of the cell wall and biotic stress defense are mentioned as possible functions (Davies et al, 2020).…”

“…The checklist of the liverworts of this area proposed here, is based on the records of this field trip and of herbarium-housed specimens collected during earlier explorations and recent data from the literature (Reeb et al 2018;Reeb and Gradstein 2020;Pócs 2011Pócs , 2015Pócs , 2020a2021;Sass-Gyarmati and Reeb 2021;Sass-Gyarmati et al 2022).…”
