In recent years, underwater visible light communication (UVLC) has become a potential wireless candidate for signal transmission in highly critical, unknown, and acrimonious water mediums such as oceans. Unfortunately, the oceans are the least explored reservoirs in oceano-geographical history. However, natural disasters have aroused significant interest in observation and monitoring oceanic environments for the last couple of decades. Therefore, UVLC has drawn attention as a reliable digital carrier and claims a futuristic optical media in the wireless communication domain. Counterparts of traditional communications, the green, clean and safe UVLC supports high capacity of data-rate and bandwidth with minimal delay. Nevertheless, over long ranges, the deployment of UVLC is challenging rather than terrestrial basis communication. Additionally, VLC systems suffer from signal attenuation and strong turbulence channel conditions. Due to the fact that, this study provides an exhaustive and comprehensive survey of recent advancements in UVLC implementations to cope with the optical signal propagation issues. In this regard, a wide detail summary and future perspectives of underwater optical signaling towards 5G networks along with the current project schemes, channel impairments, various optical signal modulation techniques, underwater sensor network architectures with energy harvesting approaches, hybrid communication possibilities, and the Internet of underwater things (IoUTs) are concluded in this research.

The use of Visible Light Communications (VLC) in vehicular applications has become a major research area due to its simplicity, high performance to cost ratio, and great deployment potential. In this context, this article provides one of the very few analyses and experimental evaluations concerning the integration of a light dimming function in vehicular VLC systems. For this purpose, a vehicle-to-vehicle VLC prototype has been implemented and used to evaluate the systems’ communication performances in light dimming conditions, while decreasing the duty cycle from 40% to 1%, and increasing the communication range from 1 to 40–50 m. The experimental results showed that in normal lighting conditions, the VLC technology can easily support low duty cycle light dimming for ranges up to 40 m, while maintaining a 10−6 BER. Nevertheless, in strong optical noise conditions, when the system reaches its SNR limit, the communication range can decrease by half, whereas the BER can increase by 2–4 orders of magnitude. This article provides consistent evidence concerning the high potential of the VLC technology to support inter-vehicle communication links, even in light dimming conditions.

The proliferation of ubiquitous computing applications created a multi-dimensional optimization problem that includes several conflicting variables such as spectral efficiency, complexity, power consumption, delay, and error probability. To relax the problem and provide efficient solutions, it was necessary to augment the currently overutilized radio spectrum with new frequency bands such as the optical spectrum, which can be used to off-load some of the traffic of certain applications. Therefore, this paper presents an efficient system design that uses amplitude-coherent (AC) detection to reduce the complexity of optical wireless communication systems (OWC), improve its reliability and spectral efficiency. More specifically, we use amplitude shift keying with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) at the transmitter, and AC detection at the receiver. The complexity reduction is achieved by using a low complexity detector, channel estimator, and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction scheme. The spectral efficiency is achieved by using real data symbols with discrete cosine transform (DCT), which requires a subcarrier spacing that is 50% of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), and does not require Hermitian symmetry to generate real-valued OFDM signals. Moreover, the derived channel estimator is blind, and the PAPR reduction scheme does not require a feedback overhead between the transmitter and receiver.
