A survey of the pathology of marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) derived from a marmoset breeding unit

Abstract: The results of a survey of the major pathological conditions encountered in an established breeding colony of common cotton-eared marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) is presented. 265 home-bred and 70 imported wild-caught marmosets were examined. A Heinz body haemolytic anaemia and skeletal muscle myopathy were the most common pathological findings and were considered to be a result of a complex nutritional deficiency involving vitamin E, selenium and protein. Inflammatory disease of the intestinal tract was also a… Show more

“…Over the course of several years, complete necropsies were performed on 46 marmosets originating from this colony. The spectrum of spontaneous pathology documented was similar to that reported in the literature for common marmosets (Chalmers et al, 1983;David et al, 2009;Kaspareit et al, 2006;Ludlage et al, 2005) Abbreviations: EHS, enterohepatic Helicobacter species; IBD, inflammatory bowel disease.…”

“…2,4 Coxsackieviruses were isolated from a few of the tamarins, but the viruses failed to transmit the disease. 2 Coxsackieviruses can cause DM and steatitis in mice, 7 and these lesions together are otherwise highly suggestive of vitamin E deficiency.…”
