A Survey of Trace Metals in Vegetation, Soil and Lower Animal Along Some Selected Major Roads in Metropolitan City of Lagos

Abstract: The concentration of trace metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in a total of 144 samples of grass, soil and lower animal (earthworm, Lybrodrilus violaceous) were collected and analysed for their metallic content. Levels of cadmium ranged from 0.01-0.07 microg g(-1); 0.01-0.12 microg g(-1) and from trace-0.05 microg g(-1) dry weight for plant, soil and animal samples respectively. Mean concentration of copper ranged 0.10-1.48 microg g(-1); 0.10-2.90 microg g(-1) and 0.01-0.08 microg g(-1) for samples in similar order as… Show more

“…Bedobo (30 mg·kg -1 ) has the highest concentration, while Mari (7 mg·kg -1 ) has the lowest. Betare Oya soils concentrations in Cu are lower than the one of the earth's crust (75 mg·kg -1 ), but higher than those of Lagos (0.1-2.9 mg·kg -1 ) [22]. In general, Co concentrations in the four sites are lower than normal value (40 mg·kg -1 ) authorized by the WHO [15].…”

“…Each of the solid residues obtained was digested with a 3:1 concentrated HNO 3 and HClO 4 mixture for 10minutes at room temperature before heating on a hot plate. The digested mixture was placed on a hot plate and heated intermittently to ensure a steady temperature of 150°C over 5 hours until the fumes of HClO 4 were completely evaporated [12]. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and then filtered using Whatman No.1 filter paper into a 50 cm3 volumetric flask and made up to the standard mark with deionized water after rinsing the reacting vessels, to recover any residual metal.…”

“…Sediments sampling: Fifty five sediment samples were collected from four roads that experience intense traffic conditions in Bida Town with the aid of stainless spoon, washed with soap and rinsed with distilled water after each sampling (Awofolu, 2005). These roads are BCCIdi road, Govt.…”

“…These deposits as street sediment have become an important medium for the study of anthropogenic pollutants and their possible sources (Ferguson and Kim, 1991;Watts and Smith, 1994;De Miquel et al, 1997;Naqerotte and Day, 1998;McAllister et al, 2000;2005). Urban street sediments have limited residence times and therefore provide a record of recent accumulations (Pereira et al, 2007;Pagotto et al, 2001;Sutherland and Tolosa, 2000;Sutherland, 2003).…”
