Febrile seizure (FS) is among the leading cause of pediatric admissions in developing countries.The etiologic patterns of FS among children attending Pediatric Emergency of Ekiti State Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti were studied. A prospective study of children who had FS was carried out. A prevalence of 2.9% was found and malaria was the leading cause of FS in 111 (85.4%) patients. Seventy-eight (60%) of the 130 patients with FS had their seizure occurring within the first 24 hours of onset of fever. Malaria was the most common cause of fever precipitating FS in the index study. Prevention of malaria and prompt management of fever will reduce the prevalence and improve the outcome of FS. The overall prevalence of FS is similar to developed countries and the etiology is similar to other studies from Nigeria.

Introduction: Febrile seizures (FS) are the commonest convulsions in children in the 6-60 month age group. They are a cause of great concern and fear for the parents, often resulting in inappropriate management. Objectives:To describe the parental responses during FS and to document the parental knowledge on how to manage a recurrence. Method:A prospective study was performed on 160 randomly selected parents of children admitted to Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital with FS over a two year period. A pretested and validated interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to assess the parental immediate responses towards the seizure and knowledge on how to manage the next seizure. Results:The mean age of the affected children was 2.2 years (SD 1.50). The male: female ratio was 1.53:1. The majority (58%) were admitted with a first FS. The type of FS was simple in 75.6% and complex in 24.4%. Only 28% had ongoing seizures during the admission. The negative parental responses towards the seizure were becoming frightened in 144 (90%), confused about what to do in 76 (47.5%), and attempting to open the mouth by force in 37 (23%). Positive responses included keeping the child in a safe posture in 76 (47.5%), shouting for help in 114 (71.3%) and feeling empowered to manage the seizure appropriately in _________________________________________

Objective To describe demographic & clinical aspects of febrile seizures (FS) presenting to Teaching Hospital (TH) Kurunegala Method A prospective study was carried out on all children aged 1 month to 5 years, admitted to TH Kurunegala with a diagnosis of FS from February to November 2005. Children with symptomatic seizures, seizures associated with central nervous system infection and those who have had neonatal seizures were excluded. Data was obtained from medical records and direct interviewing of parents /guardians using a pretested questionnaire.Results There were 2117 children aged 1 month to 5 years, admitted to TH Kurunegala during the study period. Of them 117 (5.5%) had FS. Male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Sixty percent had no previous FS. Mean age at presentation was 17 months. Thirty two percent had their first seizure under the age of 1 year. Seventy four percent of FS occurred within the first 24 hours of onset of fever. Thirty four percent had complex FS. Around 10% had developmental delay. A positive family history was obtained in 37% of patients. Febrile convulsive status was observed in 4 (3.4%) children. Nine (7.7%) children were on long term anticonvulsants.
